March is Women's History Month and as a women-owned business, the team at Stagedoor Boxes has really taken this month seriously. We launched two new products - a speciality box & sticker packs. We also put together yet another wonderful Spotify Playlist. Belt these songs from the comfort of your car or shower, or start your day feeling empowered, you can listen to the playlist here!
And with that, I have put together my top female empowerment songs. I picked these songs based on a strict criteria: I feel amazing when I sing them. I feel amazing for a myriad of reasons, whether it's I belted the crap out of it, I hit that insanely high note, or I somehow managed to get all the lyrics out of my mouth without messing up. These are in no particular order, just what came to my mind!
The Greatest Star - Barbra Streisand/Funny Girl
"I am a bagel on a plate full of onion rolls." I think everyone has felt that way sometime in their life. This song is the crown jewel when it comes to female empowerment songs. If you weren't a Barbra Streisand fan, then I hope you become one after this song. I have never sung this song live but it is on my top rotation of singing in the car - along with all the sung dialogue in the beginning. By the end, I truly feel like I Am The Greatest Star.
Don Quixote - Linda Eder/Man of La Mancha
When I was a kid, I could hit these high notes easily. Despite standing up, deep breathes, vocal exercises, I can no longer hit the top note. I try very hard. But the fact that I can literally hit all the other extremely high notes is a feat in itself. It is not a song for altos. Oh and then hitting the belt notes as well - no other song shows off my range like this which is why it makes me feel so good about myself!
Gods Love Nubia - Heather Headley/Aida
This is a controversial pick as I am fully aware that I am not Black. However, I love singing this song. There's a very long story associated with this song so I will try to do an abridged version. I had a very long walk and I decided to sing this song out loud during my walk in full voice. I had a stranger come up to me and say, "Oh my god you're amazing!" So that made me feel good and I enjoy singing this song. I have never performed it live (other than on the street walking) but it's a car karaoke staple.
Satisfied - Renée Elise Goldsberry/Hamilton
Even though I am definitely a Peggy, my dream part in Hamilton is Angelica. I think we have all been there; when you have a crush on a guy and he likes your best friend instead of you. It's frustrating! While, the message of the song doesn't make me feel all that wonderful, if I can get a fraction of the words out, I feel great about myself.
Hippie Life - Eden Espinosa/Hair
This song makes me feel good for two reasons. I love the lyrics of this song. I definitely have a hippie soul. Hair has always been one of my favorites. Also, the high belt at the end of this song is so hard. When I can nail it and not crack, there's no greater feeling.
Right Hand Man - Heidi Blickenstaff/Something Rotten
This song is also a true female empowerment song. The purpose of this song is to show women are equal to if not slightly better than men. It also shows that being in a relationship is a partnership. It's also comedic in nature and therefore, goes on this list. I am looking forward to one day performing it somewhere.
Wizard & I - Idina Menzel/Wicked
"Unlimited. My future is unlimited." A lot of people will put Defying Gravity on their female empowerment list. However, this was always my favorite song to sing. In this song, Elphaba is for a lack of a better term - green - and doesn't realize that there's more to life than just not being green. This whole song is an emotional journey for the character. And I always enjoyed the sweetness in the beginning and then belting the last chorus.
Over The Moon - Idina Menzel/Rent
A baby Idina. I was first introduced to her as Maureen in Rent. And still Maureen is my ultimate dream role. It was the first contemporary musical that with a powerful belting character. As much as I idolized Ethel Merman, I finally found another woman who had my voice type that was "cool." I saw Rent 9 times on Broadway and saw Idina at least 2 times that I remember. I have never performed this live but this was literally my favorite song to sing for years and years.
Good Morning Baltimore - Marissa Jaret Winokur/Hairspray
Hairspray was a huge deal for me. For the first time, an overweight teenage girl was the lead of a show. Representation is important and this was the first time where I felt that I could actually be the lead in a show. Good Morning Baltimore is a power anthem. It's all about feeling good about yourself and believing that you can accomplish anything. I sang this at karaoke at Camp Lenox in front of literally 100 strangers who didn't know who I was. I don't think there's a song out there that perfectly summarizes me than this!
Another Hundred People - Angel Desai/Company
This song brings me a lot of joy. I find it really compelling. I think it challenges all of us to find our place in the world. The truth is, without the vocals, I cannot sing this song. I tried singing it at an audition once and I bombed so hard. It was perfect IN THE CAR! This is and always will be a car karaoke staple.
I hope you enjoy my list of songs that make me feel good when I sing them. Whether it's a song to lift my spirits or show off my talent, all of these songs make me feel empowered in some way! What songs make you feel empowered?
